Conservation and life in Borneo

Just another day at the office

Here’s a little look at what it’s like during a day working as a volunteer at the BSBCC.

0530: That bloody cockerel!

0700: Time to think about getting up.

0810: Stop the car, those fallen branches could make good enrichment.

0845: Breakfast (3 slices of toast from the cafeteria, but only ever enough butter & honey to cover 2).

0900: Cleaning the pens at the bear house.

1000: Make some insulators to repair a section of the electric fence.

1115: Go to the office and finish off a lesson plan for the keepers.

1200: Go for a bit of exercise.

1300: 2 glasses of Milo and a veggie fried rice from the canteen.

1330: Return to the office, just in time for a “What the hell’s going on?” moment.

1330.02: Chase a hairy ginger “gyppo” out of the building after it has wrecked the kitchen.

1345: English class for Daniel (left) and David (right).

1415: Clean up the mess made by ape.

1500: Observe bears in the enclosure for a few minutes to remind myself what it’s all about and also ponder their behaviour and get ideas for enrichment.

1520: Various odd jobs that need doing.

1600: Feeding time. Feed Julaini and a-Lun, then take trays up to Kudat, Panda & Rungus.

1630: Wash up, tidy up & talk about what needs doing tomorrow with keepers. Also time to help them a little with their English and maybe work on my Malay or Dusun.

1700: Keepers go home. Go up to office and check email while waiting for others.

1745. Home time.

1800: Get back, do chores while food is cooking, eat, shower & spend an hour or so on the Internet.

2000: Go to bed. Read for a while then sleep.

Just out of curiosity, what are the typical duties of a female volunteer? ๐Ÿ™‚
