Conservation and life in Borneo

I’ve got worms!

Fortunately the worms I have are not of the parasitic variety (apart from the ubiquitous leeches), they are ones I harvested for the bears. They are given to the bears as part of their rehabilitation. This is perhaps not everyone’s cup of tea, but it is vital that they are able to recognise such organisms as potential prey items if they are to be able to fend for themselves one day. I am also doing this with a number of terrestrial and aquatic snail species. Sun bears chomp down on about 150 or more species of plants and animal in the rainforest of Borneo.

Tortoises are also on a sunbear’s menu.

I found this little chap this morning whilst out on a run through the jungle. The shell is not much of a deterrent to a determined sun bear, but don’t worry, I left it alone. Fascinating creatures. I could have observed it for hours were it not for my schedule.
